Haiti Empowered Update

In honor of the Haitians we support, we  decided to simplify the July newsletter.

As many of you might have heard...A few weeks ago, massive flooding hit the Leogane area (where our schools are), devastating the region.

Too many of our Haitian students, families and staff have been reduced to just the clothes they wore before the flood. Others have lost their home and are fearful of the next storm.

The question we all might ask is why?

  • We know the total lack of government coordination and resources exasperate an already difficult situation.

  • We know each village must figure out how to mitigate flooding the best they can. They are working together.

What was our response?

  • Haiti Empowered prudently prepared for situations like this. All of our schools were reopened within a couple of days, having sustained minimal damage.

  • Haiti Empowered continues to bring hope in our mission to do God's work.  We seek to address the physical, along with emotional and spiritual needs that arose.

  • Haiti Empowered rushed relief packages with food, soap and other supplies to avoid health issues that come with flooding.

  • Haiti Empowered is checking with every student and staff member to get a status and help where we can.  This is a challenge as some had to move and others tragically perished.

Compilation of statements after the flood...

Haitian Pastor - "In heaven there will be no more tears or floods".

Staff member - "They just can't get a break and there is a huge storm coming in a few weeks".

Construction team  - "It is a good thing we made engineering and landscape changes.  All of our schools and buildings survived with minimal damage".

Haitian leader - "People are very fearful of the next storm. Children sat on their small tin roof watching  their meager belongings wash away and get lost in the mud. The trauma is very strong".
